Memorial Day in the Country Garden

June 2, 2010

We spent Memorial Day in the Country Garden with two of our family veterans. My father in law served in World War II, my husband in a peace time Army, our future son in law is presently in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, there are many more whose memories we honored this past weekend.

I never fail to find beauty in the gardens my mother in law loved and cared for over the course of more than 50 years in her home. She loved bulbed flowers and flowering bushes and trees and planned her garden so that something is almost always blooming. The Asiatic Lilies, Knock Out Roses, Hydrangea and Magnolias were in full bloom this weekend.

The Hydrangea is one of four bushes that line the front porch. They all originated with one plant that was sent to my mother in law to celebrate the birth of her youngest son almost 50 years ago. I don’t know the variety, but the blossoms get really big, blue heads. Enjoy! I’ll have more photos of the Carolina Victory Garden soon.
